It could help us to complete the top of the message system. Also telephone numbers if the members do not mind, just in case some one has something to sell/want/help and forgets to put their contact number. Many thanks. EDITOR.. Sorry Roy I cannot do this until I have the new questionnaire system up and running as the present questionnaire does not actually ask the vital question "Publish name y/n?". ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members)+Chris From: 20G (Roy Dickens) Subject: Ref:Recent news headlines! Also for the fKEY strip by Chris.I don't think we could remember all the fkeys without one. Changing over to the system was OK after a while. But I missed the Spellmaster with Interword, now, after saving the message, I run the message with Spellmaster spot the errors, reload the system and correct them (Well most!). What about the 8BS Menu Print/Reader then? A smashing bit of kit by Chris to help us even more. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members)+3SQ From: 20G (Roy Dickens) Subject: Fellow member Tim Parsons I would like to thank Tim for his prompt help with Viewsheet windows. Tim and Ron Marshall were the only members to get in touch with me. Maybe others do not use or print Viewsheet.(I am surprised because it seems OK to me). Tim is a very active member with 8BIT, SOLINET and BYTEBACK magazine. Also a two page assessment of Martin Pickering's INTER-MAIL has appeared in BEEBUG Jan/Feb 94 magazine written by Tim. So again thanks for all your time and effort. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members)+3PM From: 20G (Roy Dickens) Subject: Program info. Seriously I think nothing will be done as the computer is extinct and who is to say Acorn will still be around come the year 2000. The only salvation is some genius out there coming up with a solution with DIY potential. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members) From: 0E7 (Fred Nevin) Subject: Health of 8BS It is nice to learn that we appear to be in a good state of health even though the majority of members like myself are non productive in the programming field. We can only therefore salute the minority and offer our profound thanks for the splendid material offered each month and give full credit to the Editor and staff for their efforts in producing the magazine each month. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members) From: 0E7 (Fred Nevin) Subject: Choice of Computers Thank you Daniel for your very lucid desciption of what is available todate in the Acorn World for replacement of our present Computers at some time in the future. It all depends on the family and that I think is the solution to all of todays problems. It is also better to have some if even naive idea of what is going on in the world than to be brought up in total ignorance and suddenly to find oneself out in the big cruel world. It is all a matter of exposure and control. Just like taking a perfect photograph. Too much exposure and the shot is ruined, too little has the same result. It is necessary to obtain a balance. Anyway I like nice GRAPHICS and MUSIC.'How about You' ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members) From: 0E7 (Fred Nevin) Subject: VDU I require a Medium or High definition monitor.Does anyone have one in good condition that they no longer need and wish to sell?. I was dubious as to whether this would work and decided to try it out on the old ribbon in my printer. I decided to use the following method!! I pulled a few inches out of the cassette and with the extension on the WD40 can sprayed very gently the tape. This was rather tedious and the time taken exorbitant.(I was in a good mood that day). I pulled all of the ribbon out of the cartridge only to be amazed at the having done this before I was surprised pile of ribbon I ended up with. The thought then came as to how I got it all back in the cassette.I tried rewinding it only to have the whole rapidly grind to a halt. There was only one thing to do and that was to split the top off the cartridge. This proved very easy as the top was just held in position by plastic projections.I saw at once what the trouble was. I had been winding the tape the wrong way. Then for good measure tape, plastic cogs and retaining spring all sprung out on to the floor. After sorting that lot out I reassembled the cassette firstly having determined which was the correct way to wind the tape. All reassembled I then noticed an arrow on the top of the cassette indicating the correct way to wind the tape.Aint that just like life. Now came the really serious part. How best to 'ink' the ribbon. The first method I had tried was very laborious and I was rapidly running out of time with a great pile of ribbon on a very thick piece of newspaper.I decided to take the extension piece off the WD40 can and just spray the lot. This made a mess of the newspaper but I was not worried as I had read it. After some five or so hours (Colin states overnight and I have no doubt that would be far better) I inspected the tape and decided to rewind it into the cassette. I tried it out in the printer and I was surprised at the result. It was as good as new except where the WD40 had not soaked, but considering the haste with which this was done I am well satisfied with the results. Now Colin have you a better way of applying the WD40. It is a bit of a bind having to do each mm of tape and the spray method I used (I was in a hurry as usual) does not guarantee a hundred percent accuracy just the mess. Have you any suggestions please or has anyone else a better method?. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members) From: 0E7 Subject: PRINTER I have obtained a CANON PW-1080A printer with no manual or any information about it. I can get the Printer to print but there is no line feed. Without pulling the printer to bits so far I have been unable to find any Dip switches etc. Can anyone help in this matter please either by supplying an old manual or a copy or advice. I seem to recall there is a code that can be entered into the computer to provide a line feed but my ROM has gone walkabout.HELP!!!!! ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members) From: K2F (JOHN DAVIS) Subject: CONUNDRUM EXPLANATIONS Trying out the new wordwrap... somet hing seems to be a bit odd. Oh well. It was nice to see so many answers t o the Restaurant Conundrum. I was goin g to send in a solution, but somehow i nertia triumphed. Now I don't feel so guilty. Jack Tourle's answer was perfect - b rief, simple, and correct. 4MD might l ike to rethink the first part of his a nswer. Yup, 3PM, I found your pound, b ut decided to spend it on headache pil ls. Now here's another mysterious conund rum: can anyone explain Fred Nevin's e xplanation? Entertaining, but.... P.S. The layout of this message is a fake - I thought Chris might enjoy a short panic thinking the wordwrap wasn't working, but I doubt if he was fooled for a moment. EDITOR Rotten ***! I tell you what though John, there seems to be a problem with your disc drive as I can hardly read your discs! ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members) From: K2F (JOHN DAVIS) Subject: HELPLINE Would it be possible for 8BS to set up some sort of Helpline to help sort out computer-related problems, such as technical problems with the innards of the Beeb and other hardware, programming problems, etc. For example, I'm having sound problems with my Beeb - there isn't any - and having twiddled the gizmo inside that controls the volume, to no effect, I've exhausted my technical expertise. If 8BS had a Helpline that operated at a fixed time each week for two or three hours, maybe at weekends when calls are cheap, members could get some of their problems sorted out quickly. Problems solved - or not - through a Helpline could also filter back into the magazine, perhaps as a separate section. I would be happy to pay a bit for this service, by, say, including an extra payment to 8BS for each call to the Helpline when sending in payment for the next issue. EDITOR.... Good idea John. Firstly, can anyone offer 8BS this service? Secondly, anyone may ring me whenever they want. I am no expert, but know a few people that could help with all sorts of problems and I have been known to attack my insides now and again, well quite often to be honest. Thirdly, I reckon that it will not be long before someone has a bit of help for your sound problem. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members) From: K3T (Neil Taylor) Subject: HELP!!
