From: D5B (Jon Ripley) Subject: Program packing... In the last couple of issues there has been a lot of talk about program compressors, a while ago - issue 47 I think - Chris featured an article that I had written all about this elusive subject. Copies of this issue are available from Chris at the usual prices. The article included information about packing/compressing BASIC programs, and also included information on good programming techniques, but was only included on the ADFS discs. I believe that it was featured on a later DFS issue 48 or 49 I think but you will have to ask Chris to be sure. It is well worth taking a look at. Contents... 1) Remove spaces 2) Colons after repeats 3) Colons after DEF statements 4a) Semi-colons before TAB( statements 4b) Semi-colons before quote marks 5) REM statements 6) END and STOP at the end of a program 7) Variables after NEXT statements 8) Nested FOR loops 9) GOTO in IF statements 10) THEN statements 11) Colons before and after ELSE statements 12) Arrays More in the relevant issue! Over the last few issues a few jovialities (jokes) have appeared thanks to Chris and co. Some of these, either just for fun or to help stimulate message writing were taken a bit seriously by some. There are two instances that I can list... In issue 48 J.Davis submitted a program to calculate the odds of winning the game of Craps (a game of mine that appeared in a previous issue). I believe that some people may have taken this too seriously. Next was the discussion about the best way to count seconds accurately; there was no real fighting going on but still some people complained, and what may have been a good forum for debate was abandoned. Please take the advice of my picture, 'Smile, you'll enjoy life and live longer!'. Here's looking forward to more jokes and heated debate in the future! Just a quick comment to all those 8BSers out there! The colours Blue and Red cannot be seen properly (or even at all) on some TV's and monitors. (Especially the mono/b&w ones!) Of course it doesn't mean that they can't be used at all as they certainly are useful colours but for large portions of text they are unsuitable. What do you think about this? Do you have a mono monitor and have no problem with these colours???
