JSBeeb Emulation with 8BS Disc Images

Back to 8BS

Info on JSBeeb here

This will work in Android but I need a USB, Wireless or Bluetooth keyboard for the input. I have not tested it with virtual keyboard apps, they may or may not work.

There is a new burger menu for the emulator section of the 8BS website.

There is a separate page for each section of the catalogue with preloaded disc images. Done this way so that there are not 2000 or more images to wade through in one large list.

To use the emulator on the 8BS site, first select the catalogue section you wish to view using the burger menu that is individual to these emulator pages or use the links above here.

The first disc image will load in and run automatically. There is a bar above the emulator window with a drop down menu from where you can choose any available image for that catalogue section. To leave the disc selection drop down after selecting a different disc image, I have found that you need to press 'TAB' before you can do things in the emulator.

Top left of the emulator window is the text 'jsbeeb'. Clicking on this takes you to JSBeeb hosted at https://bbc.xania.org/

Top right of the emulator window is a burger menu that toggles emulator configuration. You can choose a BBC model with a particular filing system type. Bear this in mind when trying to run various discs. The disc description in the drop down disc selection menu will give a clue as to which filing system you require. This page explains the conventions for disc images I have used on 8BS, usually the file extensions denote what filing system is required.

As a general rule, if the disc filename extension is .ssd or .dsd, then select a DFS filing system. For .adl .adm and .ads, select an ADFS filing system.

The Master 128 is capable of both ADFS and DFS but the emulator conveniently lets you choose an emulator that will default to one or the other.

There are a couple of other nice touches in the emulator but I will let you find them for yourself.

After that, it's just like using a real Beeb.

Have fun :-)
